Shop Dessein Parke presents an eclectic mix of international designer pieces in a new pop-up.

Last year, designer Natalie Parke and Matilde Hidalgo opened Shop Dessein Parke online, featuring a range of vintage and new furniture from brands including Paris-based Moustache Editions. “We’d both been longtime admirers and were super surprised that they weren’t already available here,” says Parke, “so when we approached the team, and they said yes, it seemed like a natural progression.” Right now, Shop Dessein Parke also has a pop-up store in Grey Lynn, Tāmaki Makaurau.

Why have you opened a shop?

Being a designer of quite eclectic spaces, I have always been challenged by the range of products available in New Zealand. Matilde being from Spain and a lover of vintage and unique things also found the same problems, especially coming from a part of the world where these things are so readily available, so it made sense to us to create this platform. We stock a range of contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories with brands Simone & Marcel, a boutique lighting manufacturer in Spain; Christina Lundsteen, a Danish cushion designer; and Moustache Editions, a French furniture, lighting and object collective; and we are also building up a range of vintage pieces from around the world.

Tell us a bit about Moustache Editions.

Moustache Editions is a collection made for Moustache, a Parisian publishing and design house launched by Stéphane Arriubergé and Massimiliano Iorio. They work with well-known designers from around the world to create bold and instantly recognisable collections, pushing the boundaries of design and taking often quite avant-garde ideas and concepts, and making them accessible to consumers, which I think is why we gravitated to them so much.

Cute shop. What did you do?

There was a lot of scrubbing of floors and we had to repaint one of the walls as it was black chalkboard paint. Matilde is an amazing sewer, so she made the curtains. It was a team effort to get the place tidied up and ready to go – five adults and five kids doing bits and pieces and generally getting in the way of each other. The beautiful thing about this space is the massive windows and the natural light it gets, especially in the afternoon, and the high stud which creates that feeling of airiness.

How long will the pop-up be there?

It was originally for a month, but we are still here, so maybe it will be a longer-term thing. And you can always find us online at shopdesseinparke.co.
